What People Are Saying
Sierra Construction Group, Inc
Why condensation forms in the attic on the roof sheathing
Research at BRC and elsewhere clearly indicates that moisture is carried into attics from below on small currents of air. Moisture laden air leaking from the living spaces is one major source.
Surprisingly, crawlspaces can supply much of the damaging moisture to attics. Moist air from crawlspaces rises through openings around plumbing.
Properly Insulated
This will help reduce the amount of moist warm air escaping from the home into the attic.
Ventilate the Attic
Using vented soffits and a high quality ridge vent is the best way to achieve this.
Excess Moisture
This can be done using de-humidifiers, sump pumps, installing vapor barriers in wet crawl spaces or damp basements.
Basements
Wet basements and crawl spaces are among the biggest problems with indoor moisture

ATTIC VENTILATION
Proper roof
ventilation
It will keep the attic cooler in the
summer and drier in the winter.
Proper venting will reduce the
chances of ice dams, roof
condensation and also help
reduce energy consumption.
resulting in condensation
In the colder months warms moist air that escapes through the ceilings can hit the cold plywood and get trapped resulting in condensation.
Ridge Vents
An easy way to tell the difference between a knowledgable Roofer and one cutting corners is to look at the ridge vents they use.
Gable vents
Gable vents should be closed off and attic fans should be removed or turned off. Check out the video below to see the difference in Ridge Vent performance.

ICE DAMS
Here are a few common causes
of heat loss into the attic
Ventilation
The first step that should be taken is to make sure the attic is well ventilated. The goal is to keep the attic air and the air outside the same temperature to prevent melting at the higher points on the roof.
Insulation
We recommend using R-30 or higher in the entire attic. Seal around ceiling penetrations as well, call a professional insulation contractor to access attics and when trying to insulate around lights etc.
Heat Cables
When all of the above options have been exhausted or special circumstances prevent one of the above then we recommend the use of a commercial heat cable. Cables will keep the lower part of the roof from freezing.
